June arrives softly in the Val d’Ayas. Snow retreats without haste, giving way to meadows scattered with wildflowers. Streams loosen their grip on winter and begin to murmur again, carrying meltwater down from the mountains. After May’s lingering uncertainty, the landscape finally exhales and becomes itself.
For those who live here, June is charged with feelings that resist explanation. Not because they are dramatic, but because they run deep. Mountain people are discreet by nature, and some emotions belong more to lived experience than to words. This is one of those months.
You might be sitting quietly with a coffee when, without warning, the sound of bells drifts through the air. It grows louder, closer. Stepping outside, you find yourself face to face with a slow procession of cows moving through the village streets.
This is Arpà, the seasonal ascent of livestock from village barns to high mountain pastures. An ancient rhythm still woven into daily life. There is no announcement, no spectacle, just animals, farmers and the steady music of bells marking the start of alpine summer.
As you move up the valley, another detail catches the eye. Balconies overflowing with flowers. Geraniums, petunias, daisies, trailing alyssum spill from wooden railings in careful combinations.
These displays are not accidental. They are a quiet matter of pride, tended patiently, often with the watchful approval of grandmothers who know exactly which flowers belong where. For visitors, they offer beauty. For locals, they are a gesture of care toward the home itself.
June is also the beginning of haymaking. Tractors and mowers appear on narrow village roads, and the air fills with the scent of freshly cut grass. It is hard work, dictated by weather and daylight, but deeply rooted in necessity.
By the end of the month, round hay bales rest across the fields like punctuation marks in the landscape. A visible reward after days spent watching the sky and working the land.
Among the most heartfelt moments of June is the Festa della Riconoscenza, a celebration held since the early 1980s. For two days, generations gather not for tourists, but for one another.
Saturday evening is informal and generous. Shared food, homemade desserts, music and dancing fill the village, organised by younger residents who take on the role with pride. Sunday shifts focus to the elders, considered the living pillars of the community.
The day begins with mass in the church of Antagnod, followed by a communal lunch. Then come traditional dances performed by Li Tsoque d’Ayas, the local folk group. Adults and children wear traditional costumes and wooden clogs known as tsoque, moving with joy and respect. Later, short theatrical sketches are performed in patois, the local dialect, a language that carries memory as much as meaning. The day ends with the Ancherè, a village auction of donated objects, lighthearted and communal.
As June draws to a close, other small celebrations follow. After the patron feast of Saint John in Lignod, the Festa of Barmasc brings families together once more. A mass at the sanctuary is followed by picnics spread across nearby meadows.
Children run freely. Adults linger over conversations, songs and recollections of earlier days. Nothing is scheduled tightly. Time is allowed to stretch.
In the Val d’Ayas, June is not defined by events alone. It is defined by connection. Between people and animals, land and memory, work and celebration.
This is why, for this small mountain community, June is known simply as the month of the heart.
