Winter in the Aosta Valley is not only about skiing and snowy landscapes. Between January and March, villages from the whole region come alive with one of the most fascinating Alpine traditions: the historic Carnivals of the Aosta Valley.
A colourful calendar of parades, traditional masks, historical reenactments and local celebrations that reveal the true soul of the mountains.
For guests staying in Champoluc, Carnival time is the perfect opportunity to discover the region beyond the ski slopes and enjoy an authentic cultural experience.
The Carnival season traditionally opens in Aosta with the Carnavals de Montagne, a large gathering of masked groups and folk traditions from across the region. The historic centre turns into an open-air stage, where medieval-inspired costumes, rural symbols and Alpine legends parade through the streets.
It is an ideal event for visitors, offering a unique overview of the rich cultural diversity of the Aosta Valley in just one weekend.
In the colder and higher valleys, such as Valpelline and the Great St Bernard area, the famous Coumba Freida Carnivals take place. Their iconic figures are the landzette, traditional masks wearing richly decorated costumes covered with beads, mirrors and bells.
According to tradition, these costumes symbolically recall the passage of Napoleon’s troops through the valley in 1800, but they also preserve much older meanings linked to ancient end-of-winter rituals. These Carnivals move from village to village, creating a timeless and magical atmosphere.
One of the most popular Carnivals in the region is the Historic Carnival of Pont-Saint-Martin. Parades, allegorical floats, traditional games and historical reenactments animate the town for several days, involving locals and visitors alike.
It is a lively and welcoming event, especially suitable for families, where tradition and fun blend perfectly.
In Verrès, Carnival becomes a medieval reenactment. The central figure is Catherine of Challant, celebrated with historical parades, traditional dances, torchlight processions and festivities around the castle.
A highly scenic event, ideal for guests who love history and evocative atmospheres.
Beyond the main events, almost every village celebrates Carnival with local festivities, children’s parades, music and tastings of traditional food. Places such as Saint-Vincent, Saint-Pierre, La Thuile, Torgnon and many smaller villages keep alive a simple and heartfelt tradition based on community spirit and Alpine identity.
Taking part in a local Carnival means:
discovering authentic Alpine culture
enjoying winter beyond skiing
sharing festive moments with local communities
enriching your mountain holiday with unforgettable memories
