Nestled in the heart of the Italian Alps, Val d’Ayas is home to some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the western Alpine range. This side valley of Aosta Valley, dominated by the majestic Monte Rosa massif, offers hikers and nature lovers a rare and captivating landscape, where crystal-clear streams transform into breathtaking cascades, dancing through granite rocks and ancient forests.
The waterfalls of Val d’Ayas are born from the melting glaciers of Monte Rosa and the abundant rainfall that characterizes this alpine region. In spring and early summer, when the snow melts in full force, these cascades reach their most dramatic expression, creating a natural spectacle that leaves visitors in awe.
Mascognaz Waterfall is one of the most enchanting in the valley and can be reached with a pleasant 10-minute walk from Champoluc. The path, known as the “waterfall trail,” follows the Cuneaz stream and offers several scenic viewpoints protected by wooden railings.
A short but slightly steep 10-minute climb leads directly to the waterfall, where visitors can stand close enough to feel the raw energy of the water. The trail then continues to the charming Walser village of Mascognaz, located at 1,822 meters above sea level.
Difficulty: Easy
Walking time: 10 minutes to the waterfall, 1 hour to the village
Best period: April – October
Starting point: Champoluc, behind the Tourist Office
The Evançon stream, fed by the Verra and Cortaud streams and the glaciers of Monte Rosa, forms an impressive waterfall of nearly 50 meters near the hamlet of Targnod.
The trail takes about 20 minutes and begins from the local road connecting Isollaz to the second-to-last hairpin bend below Targnod. The waterfall appears as a single, slender vertical drop, particularly striking during periods of high water flow.
Difficulty: Easy to moderate (steep descent)
Walking time: 20 minutes (one way)
Best period: May – October
Altitude: 695 meters
Starting point: Isollaz hamlet, Challand-Saint-Victor
One of the highlights of this walk is the Arlaz Waterfall, which appears after just a few minutes along the historic Ru d’Arlaz irrigation channel. The gentle sound of flowing water suddenly intensifies, and around a bend, the waterfall reveals itself in full force.
The trail follows this ancient water channel and passes through traditional hamlets such as Orbeillaz, Bechaz, and Torrettaz. From here, you can continue up to Col d’Arlaz for a stunning panoramic view over the central valley and the lower Val d’Ayas.
Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 1 km from Col d’Arlaz
Best period: April – October
Starting point: Col d’Arlaz (accessible from Saint-Vincent or Val d’Ayas)
Features: Flat cobbled path along the irrigation channel
According to local legend, a hidden treasure lies behind a large rock near the waterfall, guarded by a black calf with fiery eyes. Only on Christmas night, when the water mysteriously stops flowing, can the treasure be reached. This tale adds a layer of mystery to an already enchanting place.
Mascognaz is a traditional Walser village at 1,822 meters above sea level, made up of ancient wooden houses, barns (rascards), narrow paths, a small chapel dedicated to Saint Gratus, and a stone fountain.
Carefully restored, the village represents a perfect harmony between history and nature, making the journey to the waterfall even more special.
The Evançon stream originates from the Verra and Cortaud streams, both fed by Monte Rosa’s glaciers. As it descends near Targnod, it cuts through steep rock walls and creates a striking waterfall nearly 50 meters high, one of the most impressive natural sights in the lower Val d’Ayas.
Each season offers a different perspective:
The trails to the waterfalls pass through rich alpine ecosystems of beech, chestnut, larch, and Swiss pine forests, where you may spot chamois, marmots, golden eagles, and bearded vultures.
For the best photos, use ND filters to create a silky water effect and shoot early in the morning for optimal light.
Please help preserve this fragile environment: stay on marked trails, avoid disturbing wildlife, take all waste with you, and keep noise to a minimum.
Val d’Ayas is easily accessible from the A5 Turin–Aosta motorway, exiting at Verrès-Issogne. From there, a scenic 30 km drive leads to the main villages of the valley: Brusson, Antagnod, and Champoluc, ideal starting points for waterfall hikes.
Visiting the waterfalls of Val d’Ayas means stepping into a world where time seems to slow down, where the roar of falling water blends with the silence of the mountains, creating a natural symphony that lingers long after you leave.
Each waterfall tells an ancient story of glaciers, rock, and passing seasons, offering pure, unfiltered emotion to those who pause to take it in.
Val d’Ayas awaits you with its liquid treasures, ready to offer moments of wonder in the heart of the Alps. Pack your backpack, lace up your boots, and follow the call of the water: an unforgettable adventure is waiting.
