The first thing you notice at Pian Villy isn't the view—though Monte Rosa fills the horizon—but the silence. Not the empty silence of high peaks, but something inhabited: grass moving in the breeze, a distant cowbell, the cry of an alpine chough overhead. It's the kind of quiet that changes how you play.
Golf arrived in Val d'Ayas carrying a different idea of the sport. No championship fairways stretching to the horizon, but nine holes winding through alpine meadows at nearly 6,000 feet, where larches and spruce frame every shot. This pitch & putt course near Champoluc was designed for those who want to play without rushing, who don't mind stopping mid-round to watch the light shift across the glaciers.
Luca, the teaching pro who runs the summer courses, says most people arrive thinking only about technique: grip, swing, ball flight. Then something shifts. Maybe it's the thinner air, colder than down in the valleys. Maybe it's how alpine light bends distance in unexpected ways. Or maybe it's simply that between shots, there's time—time to breathe, to listen, to be present in a way that's rare anywhere else.
The course follows the natural roll of the land between Pian Villy and the hamlet of Sem Benelli. Summer brings families, teenagers learning the game, experienced players who've discovered that golf here feels different than golf anywhere else. Tournaments happen in August, but the atmosphere stays relaxed—more community than competition, more shared space than scorecard pressure.
Some come to practice. Some come to spend an afternoon with friends. Some come simply because it's a slow way to move through the valley, a rhythm that fits the mountains. The practice area lets you work without judgment, miss without embarrassment, try and fail and try again until the movement feels natural. Luca's lessons are never purely technical—they're conversations about golf, yes, but also about mountains, about what it means to bring a sport built on manicured perfection into a landscape where perfection means something entirely different.
By autumn, when the larches turn gold and the air sharpens, the course quiets. Fewer players, deeper silence. Those who know this place well prefer these weeks: colors intensify, Monte Rosa seems to move closer, each shot echoes in emptier space.
Golf here isn't an escape from the mountains—it's a way of being inside them. A different rhythm for moving through alpine country, built on measured steps, pauses, long gazes. What you carry down the valley at day's end rarely has much to do with the number on your scorecard.
