Winter Colours of the Val d’Ayas

Winter in the Val d’Ayas is not only a season. It is a palette.

Here, colours emerge quietly, one layer at a time, shaping how the landscape is lived and felt. White dominates, of course, but it is never alone. Green, red and blue remain present, offering contrast, warmth and depth, even in the heart of winter.

White: the rhythm of snow

White is the foundation of everything. It softens paths, roofs and meadows, slows movements and sharpens silence. On the slopes of Monterosa, snow becomes both playground and horizon, while lower down it settles gently among villages and forests.

Walking between Champoluc, Frachey and Saint-Jacques-des-Allemands, an ancient village at the foot of the Monte Rosa glacier, winter feels expansive yet intimate. The crunch of boots on snow, the muted sounds, the way light reflects off the ground. White is not emptiness here. It is space.

Green: life that endures

Even under snow, green persists. Pines and larches line paths and trails, framing winter walks and offering shelter from wind and cold. Their presence is reassuring, a reminder that life in the mountains never truly pauses.

These forests connect villages and people, inviting slow movement. A walk through them is less about distance and more about breathing, observing, letting time stretch.

Blue: the mountain sky

On clear winter days, blue becomes almost overwhelming. The sky opens wide, wrapping the valley from Monte Rosa to Monte Zerbion in a deep, luminous calm.

This is the colour of still afternoons on sunny terraces, of pauses taken without guilt, of gazes lifted upward. Blue defines the emotional space of winter, a sense of openness that balances the enclosure of snow and stone.

Red: small signs of warmth

Red appears in details. Berries clinging to bare branches, glowing against snow. Wooden façades catching the last light of day. A hint of colour that draws the eye and warms the scene.

These are the subtle notes that make winter in the Val d’Ayas feel alive and human. They speak of resilience, of cycles, of beauty found in restraint.

All was really good

We really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel L'Aiglon. Firstly the staff were so pleasant and helpful. The room was fine, next time we'd opt for one with a balcony! Comfortable bed, great shower. Plenty of storage and hooks for all our ski gear! Breakfast was in a lovely sunny room and there was plenty of choice for all nationalities. It's a slow 10 minute walk to the gondola, we opted for storing our gear there, although you can use the hotel's. Wellness centre was a perfect end to the days skiing.Definitely recommend and we'll be back!

Stayed in Hotel L'Aiglon for 3 nights earlier this week. Great place to stay. Rooms were really comfortable and plenty of space and really clean. We received a really warm welcome on arrival and right throughout our stay. Breakfast was included in the price. Food was great - loads of variety and really healthy food to prepare us for the day ahead. Would love to return and stay here again in the future.

Good and friendly service. Good breakfast. Rooms are well kept and neatly cleaned daily. Overall, we find L’Aiglon great value for the reasonable rates. We are already looking forward to our next visit!
