The Falconetta Celebration is not just a mountain hike, but a deeply moving event filled with memory, emotion and shared silence.
Every year on August 14th, hundreds of hikers gather on the summit of Becca di Nana (over 3,000 metres), a mountain overlooking the Ayas Valley and marking the border with the Valtournenche.
This tradition began in 1975 to commemorate one of the most tragic episodes in Italian alpine history: the 1954 Passo Gavia accident, in which 18 Alpine soldiers lost their lives.
One of the survivors, Giorgio Francia, placed a cross and a small altar on the summit, turning the mountain into a place of remembrance and reflection. Today, the tradition continues thanks to his son, preserving its original spirit and meaning.
At 11:00 am, a Mass is celebrated on the summit, accompanied by traditional mountain songs. The atmosphere is solemn and emotional, enhanced by the extraordinary panoramic views over the Monte Rosa massif and the Aosta Valley.
Participating in the Falconetta Celebration means experiencing the mountains in their deepest sense: a place of memory, respect and shared humanity.
📍 Meeting point on the summit: August 14th, 11:00 am
